Chapter Seven

Kinsley came to work looking as dejected as I felt. Keesha, who had taken over the role of branch manager since Lena had been arrested, urged Kinsley to stay home today, but Kinsley declined. Instead, she insisted on being around people and keeping herself distracted.

I had to break the news of Tony’s death to Shonta this morning over breakfast. It had been horrible.

She had been pretty upset to learn of his death. This murderer was really affecting everyone in my life, and it was pissing me off.

Even Jameson was stuck to me like glue all morning, sensing something was wrong with his little kitty senses. I’d never had a pet more complicated than a goldfish, but I was really becoming attached to my new feline companion.

Kinsley gave me a small, sad smile and flopped down in a chair at the front desk where Keesha and I were settling in for the morning.

Keesha and I locked eyes, seeing who would ask Kinsley what was wrong first. I somehow lost our mental battle.

“Hey Kins, how are you doing?”

She shrugged one shoulder, not bothering to look at me as she spoke.

“I’m more irritated than anything. This murderer keeps slipping through our fingers, and they’ve killed another person.”

Keesha shook her head slowly as she typed. “I can’t believe you guys found another person dead. That’s horrifying.”

I nodded.

“He was a professor at the university. We went to talk to him last night, but…” I paused, unsure of how to continue. “Um, someone had gotten there before us.”

I noticed Kinsley looked tired. Her eyelids stayed closed a little longer each time she blinked. I wondered if she wasn’t sleeping well because of the stress.

“And there is something else,” she said, meeting my gaze.

Keesha came over and put her arm around Kinsley’s shoulders. “What’s the matter, sweetie?”

“Apparently, the detective found some old text messages between Jin and I after he’d…well, you know. I didn’t mean what I said in the texts, but I was so mad that he could betray me like that. And with my cousin, too.”

“What did you say?” I asked.

She sighed.

“I told him that if he came anywhere near me, I would kill him.”

We all fell silent for a moment.

Kinsley cried, and Keesha immediately went into mom mode trying to comfort her.

“I didn’t mean it. I was just so angry, and I would never have really hurt him. My heart was broken, and I just wanted him to leave me alone,” she sobbed, her words muffled through the tears.

My heart went out to Kinsley. We finally got her to calm down after a few minutes, and she was whisked away by Keesha to splash some water on her face in the restroom.

Imagine if my friend got jailed and charged with a murder she didn’t commit. I couldn’t stand the thought. It was so absurd.

To make her feel better, I had Ms. Emery cover me at the desk while I popped into Candy’s next door to get Kinsley’s favorite drink and two giant cinnamon rolls.
